Road-Trip!

Where did we get to go this weekend?

It wasn't St.George, it wasn't Moab, it wasn't Boise or California or even Las Vegas. We got to go to WINNEMUCCA!!! Try not to be jealous.

Like most Mormons who make the trek from California to Utah and visa versa we had been through Winnemucca many many times but this was the first time that it would be the destination. We had a very good reason to go. Paul's younger sister lives there. She met and fell in love with Matt while they were both working as english teachers at the high school. On Jan. 27th they welcomed their second son, Kellen Joseph, and we got to go there for the blessing.

It was going to be a flying trip with most of the time spent in the car. We knew that we needed to be prepared are else the kids would be at each other's throats the whole time.

Our first stop? Red Box. We needed movies for them to watch in the car.
We had brought the entire collection of Dorf, a documentary on tigers and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as well but you can never have too many options.

We arranged the car so that Emma was in the back and Andrew was in the middle. They were on opposite sides to ensure that there would be no touching. It made for a lot less cargo room.
But we managed.
We ran into the grocery store and got a few extra treats because everyone knows, the best part of a road trip is the junk food! We were ready to hit the road.

Ipods were charged.

Paul was excited to drive, see.
But not as excited as I was!
We got two dozen donut holes, most of which I ate.
We had a fruit salad, wee brie, water crackers, Cherry Coke and my personal favorite snack, jerky.
Even with all that great food we had to stop in Elko for gas and Wendy's. We gave everyone a show while we stretched out front before heading off in the car again.
We got to our motel where we had some issues checking in. They only had a queen room or a room with two beds and no TV. Neither were an option. The kids were eager to run around and play with there itty bitty kites so I watched them while Paul worked out the room issues. It's too bad that the Ranch Hand Rodeo was in town or else we would have just gone elsewhere. Maybe somewhere that wasn't filthy and didn't reek of cigarette smoke.
Are these things cute!??!
About an hour after we got there grandma, grandpa, Ben and Tom arrived. The kids were happy to see their uncles. The kids love their uncles.

We all hit the local pizzeria.
Here is Paul with his brothers Ben and Tom.
There is no way to keep a straight face around these three.
Finally it was baby time!!! This is Kellen. He is so tiny and could have snuggled him for hours. Too bad others wanted a chance to hold him.

There is nothing hotter than a man with a new baby.
Big Yawn.
Emma loved the baby and his big brother John.

The kids got so excited by the lights downtown. They kept saying how cool it was at night.
We needed some late night fortification. It came in the way of smoothies, shakes and cheesecake. Gosh how I wish we had Jack in the Box in Utah.
We got back to our luxurious motel room and started to settle down for the night.

Around 11:30 p.m. some drunk cowboys showed up talking extremely loud, every other word was a cuss word. I could have sworn they were in the room with us. The walls in that hell hole were paper thin. We got to listen to them for a while and then they must have passed out or something. We did not sleep well. There were the sounds of toilets flushing, sinks running, toads, trains and snoring. Holy hell we were miserable. The sheets on the bed were so shot. The elastic was gone. Each time we moved they pulled up. Half way through the night Emma and I were in a sheet cocoon. We woke up way too early but on the bright side it left us all sorts of time to get ready for church.

Our group almost doubled their attendance in church that day. J/K ;)
These are Matt's parents.
And Mere and her parents. After I got the pictures on the computer I realized all the different groupings that were missed. I am particularly sad that we didn't get one of all five siblings together. The problem was there weren't many willing participants since everyone was hungry and eager to get home.

After church as we were heading down Winnemucca Blvd. Andrew said "a bull just got loose" and sure enough there was a truck pulling a trailer, the back of it was hanging open and a bull was standing in the road. (My dang camera was in the back of the car) We watched and laughed and followed them for a while. The bull looked very pleased to be out for a jog. The poor cowboy didn't know what to do. We watched this debacle for a while and then finally we just had to leave. It was pretty dang hilarious though.

We went over to Meredith and Matt's house to change and then we hit the road.

As we drove through the tiny Nevada towns I had the theme song from Deliverance running through my head. Can you imagine living in a town where there is a big BM on the mountain?
We got to hold our breath and make wishes while we drove through the tunnel.

After that it was a pretty quiet and uneventful drive home.
We made it back before 9:00 p.m. We were very grateful to find our house just as we left it and our Marius waiting for us. Now if you'll excuse me I need to go apply a facial mask so I can remove the great state of Nevada from my pores.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

Sometime last year, when we got the tickets for Stellaluna and Into the Woods, the kids asked to see If You Give a Mouse a Cookie so I bought tickets for that play also. It seemed like we would have to wait forever to see it. I didn't think we would ever make it to March, but we did. We went and watched the play on Friday night.

It was cute but a little ridiculous. Thankfully it only last about an hour. The kids admitted that they were a little too old for this production but they still had fun.
I love how they let you meet the cast at the Scera. (You wouldn't know if by looking at this picture but Andrew was not a fan of the mouse. He only got in the picture because I was in it.)

Still on Schedule

Barf sick is the worst kind of sick.

Andrew came home from school Monday and about an hour later started launching. I am so glad my kids are to the age where they can make it to the toilet. It's a blessing. Truly. Anyway I have had a couple of days at home where I could get a few more things done than usual.
Here are my next two blocks in the pinwheel sampler. The centers aren't good but I like the colors a lot more in these blocks.
I am trying to make three of these each day. I am getting a nice little collection going. I think they are just the cutest things. Since I am so fascinated with making these I am neglecting my Christmas quilt. It seems like each time I say "I want this done by this date" I set myself up for failure. There is no way I am going to have that top done this week. Nope, not going to happen. Such is life.

Are Our Expectations too High?

For Valentine's Day Paul ordered me the bouquet of roses that are pictured above. They are like the ones I got on our six month anniversary. Sentimental and sweet right?!?

This is what was delivered. They were pretty but in pretty bad shape.
The tips were all crushed and they felt very dry. I trimmed them, fed them and changed their water but within no time the heads were drooping and they we toast.
The little red rose we got Emma from the grocery store looked gorgeous for two full weeks!

He sent the company an email just to let them know that the flowers were not up to our satisfaction. They almost immediately sent him an apology, told him to pick a new bouquet and gave him $20 off his next purchase. Sweet!!!

This is what I picked.
This is what I got LOL!
Not exactly them same thing now is it? If I had actually paid the ticket price ($70) and this showed up I would be pretty disappointed.

I have to admit that even though the flowers are quite diminutive I am really enjoying them. I think fresh flowers should be a staple in my home ;)

From now on I am going to encourage Paul to get the less expensive flowers from somewhere local, like Costco LOL!

2010 Olympics

On February 12th we were sitting in Chili's waiting for a table when I started to get emotional watching the parade of nations. I love the Olympics. I love the excitement you see on the athletes faces. I love watching them take pictures and video as they walk in. I wish that I could be a part of that in some way. I know that the games weren't without tragedy, but they were awesome none the less.

I may not have gotten to watch as much as I wanted but that's okay. From what I did see these are some of my favorite athletes.

We love Shawn White. He blew our minds and Paul covets his pants.
Evan showed such class and poise. He was such a great example to everyone.

These girls are gorgeous and talented.
Who doesn't love Apolo? We had so much fun watching his races as a family.

I can't wait for 2012 in London. Maybe I can convince Paul to take me so I can experience that excitement in person ;)

A Lazy Saturday

I knew that Saturday was going to be spent close to home since Paul was going to BYU for a basketball game. I was looking forward to a lazy Saturday. My number one priority was to get my lesson all squared away. After that I wanted to spend time sewing, napping and relaxing.

I really wanted to get this quilt cut out. This new fabric is so yummy. I loved the colors and the patterns. The multi-color rick-rack is just the cutest thing ever. I want to buy yards and yards and bind a ton of quilts in it. LOL!
Slowly but surely I made good progress throughout the day.

Am I the only quilter out there that hates to toss these pretty little scraps?
Emma and I spent some time getting all the blocks figured out. (Yes I am that anal)
I managed to actually sew one block.
I also got the rest of these blocks sewn. I am doing a disappearing 9 patch with these. I'm hoping to have this top finished in the next week.
When Paul left for the game the kids were already pretty bored. I promised to take them up to "the reservoir" to look for rocks. We were pretty surprised at all the snow that was still up there. Shocked actually. It has all melted at our house so we weren't prepared. Emma wore Crocs.

We were glad that there was some ice though. We love trying to get rocks to break through the ice.
It was a gorgeous day.
The ice was thicker than it looked. See our collection of rocks that wouldn't go through?
We crossed over the water to see what else we could find.
Have you ever seen a spider in the snow? It was weird.
It was hard to find pretty rocks so the kids climbed them instead.
I found a few good ones.
The scenery around here is just breathtaking.
I love our view.
It's so fun to live right by this little canyon.
The kids got their hands dirty digging out a big rock that was sure to break through the ice.
Or not.
They were dumbfounded.
We had a lot of fun. I have to admit, I love the area where we live, most of the time.
